Journey before Destination

(If you get the book quote in the title let's be friends, lol.)

There are so many great roads in the Manawatu and surrounding areas. I started this post thinking to give you several different destinations, but there are so many roads you can take to Hunterville that I have just included these in this post.

Let's have a look at 6 of these to give you some inspiration. I have chosen Palmerston North as the starting point for each of these rides.


The roads to Hunterville.

1. Easiest route (47 minutes):

Take SH3 to Bulls. Turn right on to SH1. Straight road most of the way.


2. Via Mt Stewart (47 minutes):

Take SH3 to Mount Stewart Halcombe Rd

Turn right onto Mount Stewart Halcombe Rd (signs for Halcombe/Memorial Lookout)

Turn left onto Ngaio Rd(signs for Mt Lees Reserve)

Turn right onto Mingaroa Rd (signs for Kakariki)

Turn left onto Halcombe Rd

Turn right onto State Hwy 1 (signs for Taupo)


3. Via Lees Rd (50 minutes):

Take SH3 to Awahuri. Turn right onto Awahuri Feilding Rd (signs for Awahuri Rd/Feilding)

Turn left onto Lees Rd after 4km

Turn left onto Sandon Rd after 6.3km

Turn right onto Mount Stewart Halcombe Rd (signs for Mt Stewart Halcombe Rd/Halcombe/Mt Lees Reserve)

Turn left onto Ngaio Rd (signs for Mt Lees Reserve)

Turn right onto Mingaroa Rd (signs for Kakariki)

Turn left onto Halcombe Rd

Apiti via Pohangina Valley.

Continue onto Kakariki Rd

Turn right onto State Hwy 1 (signs for Taupo)



4. Via Vinegar Hill (55 minutes)

Take SH3 to SH54 (signs for Airport/Feilding)

Continue on SH54 through Feilding, following Kimbolton Rd, to Cheltenham

At Cheltenham turn left (signs for Taupo)

After an adventurous 30km's turn left onto SH1


5. Via Rangiwahia (1 hour 30 minutes)

Take SH3 to SH54 (signs for Airport/Feilding)

Continue on SH54 through Feilding for 67.7km's

Turn left onto Mangamako Rd

Turn left onto Otara Rd

Then left onto SH1


6. Via Mangaweka (1 hour 40 minutes)

Take SH3 to SH54 (signs for Airport/Feilding)

Continue on SH54 through Feilding all the way to Mangaweka

Turn left onto SH1

CAUTION: This route has a bridge at the Mangaweka end that can be hazardous and is not suitable for 3 wheelers.


Caution:

As we are heading in to the cooler and wetter months choose your roads accordingly. Some of the roads will become slippery in patches.
